What qualities should you look for in a nursing home?

If the time comes to help a loved one move into a nursing home, it's only natural to have some concerns about their safety and security. This may be the first time in a long time that the person is not living in their home.

Making matters more complicated is the fact that some nursing homes are not up to par in regard to the treatment they provide. This makes it difficult to confidently choose a nursing home facility.

Fortunately, when you know what qualities to look for in a nursing home, you can choose a facility that suits the many wants and needs of your loved one. Here are five things to look for:

  • Experienced and respectful staff: A good nursing home experience starts with an experienced and respectful staff. When you have confidence that every member of the staff will do the right thing, you never have to worry about the well-being of your loved one.
  • Well balanced diet: Your loved one should have access to nutritious, well-balanced meals that help them maintain their health. Nursing homes are notorious for having poor food selections, so check on this before making a final decision.
  • Plenty of activities: It's a myth that people move into a nursing home and do nothing more than lay around all day long. The best facilities have a variety of activities, ranging from games to dances and much more.
  • Clean and inviting: You should never consider a nursing home that has issues with respect to cleanliness. Every aspect of the facility should be clean, from the lobby to the bathrooms to the patient rooms.
  • Home-like feel: You want your loved one to feel like they're at home. Make sure they have the opportunity to customize their room, such as with family photos, to add another level of comfort.

You never know what will happen once your loved one moves into a nursing home. Some people enjoy it, some people would rather move back home and others could go either way.

It's important that you stay in close contact with your loved one to ensure that they're receiving high quality care. If, for any reason, you suspect nursing home abuse or neglect, speak with those in charge to learn more. From there, formulate a plan for taking action.
