Man believes nursing home neglect led to mother's death

The decision to place an elderly or unwell loved one in a nursing care facility is seldom an easy one. The selection is usually made after diligent research to choose the facility that will best meet the needs of the resident. Unfortunately, in spite of the care taken to find the best placement, Arizona residents may make the troubling discovery that their loved ones fell victim to nursing home neglect or abuse.

One man thought he placed his mother in a facility that provided the skilled care she required. He stated that during one visit, he found her suffering from an uncontrollable cough and an inability to hear. He was disturbed by her failing health and took her to a local hospital for evaluation. According to his account, the staff at the facility claimed that his mother did not require additional care.

At the hospital, she was diagnosed with double pneumonia, a serious ear infection and a urinary tract infection. The son stated that his mother's infections led to sepsis and her life was in jeopardy. She died from respiratory failure approximately three weeks after her admittance to the hospital. At the skilled care facility, the woman used a bi-Pap machine while she slept and when the machine was brought to the hospital, it was discovered that the water reservoir was filthy and contained mold growth.

After the family checked the woman's room, they supposedly found more mold, dirt and standing water. The nursing home staff refuted the family's claims and claim their facility meets all requirements and provides quality care. While it is too late to make a difference for this mother, the man says he is sharing his story to help others protect their loved ones from a similar fate. Arizona residents who are concerned that their loved ones may have been a victim of nursing home neglect or abuse may seek the guidance of an experienced attorney in order to pursue recompense for their damages.
