The more knowledge you collect the more confident you will be in your ability to prevent a crash.

Here are some of the most common causes of trucking accidents:

  • Inadequate training, such as related to defensive driving, driving technique and safety (this often comes back on the trucking company)
  • Reckless driving, including but not limited to speeding, changing lanes without signaling and any form of aggressive behavior
  • A system of compensation, set by the trucking company, that prompts the driver to speed or remain on the road for too many consecutive hours
  • Drowsy driving
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Distracted driving, which can include but is not limited to texting, operating a GPS system, and eating or drinking
  • An unrealistic schedule set by the trucking company

While it's good to become familiar with these common causes of trucking accidents, there's something to remember: You don't have any control over the decisions a trucker makes. So, if a people want to text and drive, they are going to do so.

From a personal perspective, there are things you can do to avoid an accident with a commercial truck:

  • Don't drive in a trucker's blind spot
  • Leave plenty of space when changing lanes in front of a truck
  • Don't drive in between two trucks
  • Be careful when merging onto the highway

By doing these things, your confidence level in regard to safety will be much higher.

What happens if you're in an accident?

If you find yourself in an accident with a truck, don't wait to call 911. Once police and an ambulance arrive you'll begin to feel better.
