Commercial vehicle accidents take a heavy toll on lives; finances

Those who drive for a living are aware of the dangers that large vehicles can present to other motorists. As a result, the majority of these professionals take precautions to ensure that they do not wind up causing commercial vehicle accidents that can cause serious or fatal injuries. Arizona officials are still conducting an investigation into one such wreck that stole the lives of two teenagers.

The wreck occurred in July of 2017. According to a statement by the driver of a large commercial vehicle, he was approaching a traffic signal that he claims has a tendency to cycle through changes. As he prepared to enter the intersection, he alleged that the amber light was illuminated. He claimed that, out of fear of being unable to stop his truck in time, he accelerated through the signal. At the last moment, he claimed he sighted a glimpse of another vehicle but was not able to avoid a collision.

After the deadly wreck, Arizona officials initially issued the driver a citation for failure to obey a traffic signal, though those charges were dropped as the investigation continued. One witness claimed that the light was red for approximately two seconds at the time the driver accelerated into the intersection. There were several passengers in the automobile that was hit. Two of them, a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, died from the injuries they suffered in the collision.

Authorities have not yet announced whether the driver of the large vehicle will face more serious charges in connection with the tragic wreck. The families of those who were killed are likely still mourning their losses, and the injured victims may not have fully recovered from this preventable crash. Families who have lost a loved one or have experienced the serious injuries that often accompany commercial vehicle accidents often have the additional burden of significant monetary damages in the form of medical expenses, lost wages and other associated losses. Families and victims may elect to pursue recovery of those documented losses through the successful filing of personal injury or wrongful death civil suits.
